Bird Watching at Ranganathittu

A boat ride along the Kaveri river watching migratory birds and crocodiles in their natural environment is a ride that is just wow. Little islands dotted with trees whose leaves we could not see because they were covered by birds. Crocodiles lazing around on rocks and sometimes camouflaged with the rocks. We did not notice them until they moved. And don’t get scared by this because they don’t attack humans as long as we mind their own business.

These birds fly to this sanctuary from countries like Russia and Siberia to avoid the extreme cold. So, the best time to visit is during the winter months from October to December. The birds lay eggs and raise their young while they are here. By the time the  winter is over the young ones are strong enough to fly black. And then the entire flocks start on their journey back to their native countries

Needless to say, it’s a nice place for photographers.

This place located in Mandya, Karnataka is very close to Bangalore. Drive there and the boat charge is minimal.

Contact the  Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary before you go and check if they have boat rides on the day you go. There are times when excess water from the KRS dam is released into the river. So, the rides are cancelled when the water levels rise too high.
